Slimming pills
PRESCRIBED
There are two types of slimming pill available on prescription in the UK.
Reductil (sibutramine) acts in the brain by influencing the release of chemicals called noradrenaline and serotonin, which control how the person feels about food, helping to make a person feel full.
By contrast, Xenical (orlistat), works by causing the stomach or intestines to absorb about 30% less of the fat you eat into the bloodstream. As with any drug treatment there are side effects associated with both of these compounds. For instance, sibutramine can increase blood pressure, and orlistat can cause diarrhoea and flatulence.
These drugs are only really suitable for obese people and the UK authorities advise doctors to prescribe them only in special circumstances. Broadly speaking this means to people with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more who have made serious attempts to lose weight by dieting, exercise and/or other changes in their behaviour. Of course your doctor will offer detailed advice.

OVER THE COUNTER
The interesting news here is the introduction of slimming pills based on Hoodia Gordonii, a cactus-like plant from the Kalahari Desert in Africa.
What to avoid
LIKE THE PLAGUE!
We strongly advise that you avoid any slimming pills or products containing ephedrine, a central nervous system stimulant used to treat breathing problems, or any associated compounds, unless prescribed by your doctor. These are known to cause unpleasant and potentially dangerous, even fatal side effects.
